Edward Hill

February 21, 1922 — March 15, 2014

Edward Harris Hill , 92, of Palmdale, California, passed away peaceful on Saturday, March 15, 2014.  Edward is survived by his loving wife Ruby of 65 years, his daughter Diane Schaeffing and her husband Jim Schaeffing, his son Craig Hill and his wife Victoria Hill; his grandchildren Tiffany Glancy and her husband Russell Glancy, Steven Hill, Candice Hill, Ashley Priestley and her husband Shawn Priestley and Brett Schaeffing; and great-grandchildren Evan Custer and Brooke Priestley. Edward was born in Mason County, Texas to Frank Hill and Nellie May Ross and had two sisters, Mildred and Betty and five brothers, Kenneth, Joe, Guy, Jimmy and Ted.  Edward’s family referred to him as “Eddie” and “Preacher”.  Edward grew up in South Gate, attended South Gate High School and later lived in Glendale, Arleta and Palmdale.  Edward served in the U.S. Navy from 10/29/42 to 2/3/46 and was station in Maui, Hawaii.  He earned a Good Conduct Medal and Victory Ribbon.  While in the Navy Edward met Owen “Oats” Haugom who later introduced him to his sister Ruby Haugom.  Edward and Ruby fell in love and were married on April 14, 1948. Edward was undefeated in the Navy Golden Gloves and was an excellent softball pitcher with a no hitter to his credit.  Edward also played basketball, golf and was an avid fan of all sports and typically favored the underdog player or team. Edward was a bartender and owned a machine shop with his brother Teddie in the early 50’s.  Edward later went to work for Litton Industries where he worked in several divisions as a buyer/purchasing agent and later retired on August 4, 1989. Edward was President of the Valley Chargers Pop Warner Football Organization in 1966.  Edward was a staunch Republican and loved to debate politics with anyone who was willing. Edward’s signature departing phase to family and friends alike was “Adios”. Edward’s family wants to extend a very special thank you to all the friends and caregivers that assisted him over the past several months. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00am, on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. Stephen’s of the Valley Lutheran Church, 1737 East Avenue R, Palmdale, CA 93550, with a reception immediately following.
