Carol Annette Metcalf, nee Keith, a 54- year resident of Palmdale, passed away March 20th, 2012. She was 80. Carol was born in Compton, CA in 1931. The Family moved to Colorado in the early 30s. Carol and her husband of 54 years, William E Metcalf (2003), returned to California in 1949. They moved to Palmdale in 1958. Carol was an accomplished horsewoman, talented musician and singer of Western Swing. Her favorite instruments were the organ, guitar and accordion. Carol had a 15-minute radio show in Grand Junction, CO, on radio station KEXO for several years, and performed with Doyle (Doye) O’Dell and other personalities there. In California, Carol performed regularly. In the early 1950’s, she was asked to perform on the Bob Hope Radio Show with the master comedian. Hope was so impressed by her singing talent that he gave her that day’s whole show! She sang, yodeled and played the guitar, while Hope tried to ‘learn to yodel’ with hilarious results! After the show, Hope had his agent take Carol directly to L.A.’s Morris Agency where she was immediately offered a contract. She continued to perform for years, including a performance at DisneyLand Anahiem , CA in 1967, playing the Hammond B-3 organ. The performance was broadcast on the park’s Mainstreet USA. Carol’s later years were filled with raising a family, playing music and reading hundreds of books a year in Palmdale. She is sorely missed. She leaves behind her adult son, David W Metcalf, a consumer cook at Desert Haven Enterprises in Lancaster, CA; her daughter Lynnette C Metcalf, Lt. Cmdr, USN (Ret.), and son-in-law Scott E. Hruska, both of Frankston, TX. Carol requested only that her ashes be placed with her husband’s at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Palmdale. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Desert Haven Enterprises.
